Brandy Bajalia

Habibti, 2018

Rope, embroidery floss

99 x 731 inches

Bajalia utilizes a large pre-existing grate in the Teacher’s College courtyard as a tool for weaving rope in a traditional Palestinian embroidery motif. The artist reflects on her memory of learning about cross-stitching over a cup of Turkish coffee with her Teta. The work is inspired by the simple, peaceful ritual of focusing on one motion while sharing life stories, and growing spiritually closer to one’s ancestors. Additionally, a sound piece has been composed for this site-specific work that focuses on layers, repetition, and patience. The sound mimics embroidery by taking a simple movement and repeating it to achieve something much more intricate.
