Rafael Pagatini

Welcome President!, 2016

Inkjet printing on haini paper

Dimensions variable

The installation consists of catalogued ads from the 60s, 70s, and 80s originally published by companies in the newspaper A Gazeta, which was in circulation in Vitória, Espírito Santo, Brazil. The dates of the newspaper used for cataloging are based on the visit of the military presidents in Capixaba lands for the inauguration of the so-called Large Projects (Porto de Tubarão, Samarco Mineração, Aracruz Celulose, Companhia Siderúrgica de Tubarão, among others) aimed at exporting commodities from the state.

The work addresses the modernizing discourse in Brazil throughout the military regime and its alliances of power in the press. The ads published in the newspaper were scanned and cataloged from the material available in microfilm of the Public Archive of the State. The cataloging seeks to point out the relationship between military and private initiative, thereby presenting the newspaper as a public space for discussion and an ideological arm of the regime. The images are affixed to the wall of the exhibition space only at the upper tips of the paper, leaving the work subject to the wind currents in the space.
